(Washington, D.C.) Today, the Senate, in a 64 to 32 bipartisan vote, approved the Employment Nondiscrimination Act (ENDA), which would bar employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Toomey’s amendment would require 60 votes for passage, which is considered unlikely in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

Our Impact

I worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for close to two decades. I was paid less than my male co-workers the entire time—even though I was doing the same work they were and doing it well. Near the end of my time there, I received an anonymous note alerting me to the discrimination, and I decided to fight for justice, with the help of the National Women's Law Center and its allies.

A coach in Birmingham, Alabama, Roderick Jackson was not afraid to speak his mind. When he witnessed the inferior practice and game conditions provided for his girls’ high school basketball team, compared to those provided for the boys, he complained to school administrators, calling it as he saw it: unfair sex discrimination.

Yesterday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid filed cloture on Georgetown Law Professor Nina Pillard, one of three pending nominees to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Ready for the absurd? Yesterday a Kansas school suspended a 13-year old student for wearing a purse. Happened to be a Vera Bradley bag, but that shouldn’t matter, because it wasn’t the bright colors or quilted paisley design that prompted the disciplinary action. It was the fact that the student is a boy.
