Tennessee’s law in short
Tennessee requires seat belt use by the driver and front-seat passengers, and it is a primary offense — an officer can stop you for the belt alone, without any other violation. Child restraint requirements are separate and enforced more strictly, with the requirement varying by the child’s age and size.
For an adult driver, a first seat belt offense is a small fine and does not carry license points. That is genuinely the whole story in most cases.
The two times it is worth a call
It came with something else. Because the belt is a primary offense, it is a lawful reason to stop a car — which makes it a common stated reason for stops that produce other charges. If a seat belt citation arrived alongside a drug charge, a weapon, or a suspended license, the citation is not the issue and the stop is worth examining.
