Traffic Matters
Short answer: you almost never have to go. We appear for you. Germantown Municipal Court hears traffic citations on Wednesday evenings, and for an ordinary ticket your lawyer can stand in your place. Call (901) 324-5000 or text 901-412-2973 with a photo of the citation and our flat fee for a Germantown ticket starts at $250, quoted in full before you decide anything.

Germantown police write a lot of tickets for a city its size. Poplar Avenue, Germantown Parkway, Wolf River Boulevard, and the stretch of Highway 385 inside the city limits are patrolled closely, and plenty of the people cited do not live there. They were on the way to Saddle Creek, a soccer game, or the office. Then a court date arrives for a Wednesday night in a city they drove through once.
Brooks Law Firm has handled thousands of traffic tickets across Memphis and Shelby County and defends hundreds of drivers every year. We appear in Germantown Municipal Court regularly. This page covers what happens with an ordinary Germantown citation. If you hold a commercial license, start with our Germantown CDL ticket page instead, because the rules are different.
Do not pay it online
The City of Germantown lets you search your violation and pay it from your phone. That convenience is a guilty plea. The moment the payment clears, you have a conviction for a moving violation on your Tennessee driving record. Points attach, and your insurer will see it at the next renewal. Over three years the premium increase routinely costs several times the fine. Paying is the fastest way to close the ticket and usually the worst financial outcome.
What usually happens instead
For most first citations in Germantown, the realistic outcomes fall into three groups. Which one you get depends mostly on the speed alleged and your record.
- Dismissed on court costs. The charge goes away. You pay the court its costs and nothing reaches your driving record. This is the most common resolution for a routine speeding or stop sign ticket.
- Amended to a non-moving violation. The citation is changed to something that carries no points, such as a parking or equipment violation. Your insurer never sees a moving violation.
- Driver safety school. On a higher speed, the prosecutor may want a defensive driving course as part of the deal. Finish it and the ticket is dismissed.
In Germantown the dismissal often comes with a short probationary period, commonly six months, during which you keep a clean record and the citation is then dismissed on costs. That is still a win: nothing reaches your driving record and your insurer sees nothing.
Speeds well into the twenties over the limit narrow those options. At that level the city may treat the stop as reckless driving, which is a Class B misdemeanor with possible jail time rather than a traffic infraction (the penalties and points are set out separately). That is still very defensible, but it is a different conversation, and it is one reason to call before the court date instead of after.
Tickets we handle in Germantown
- Speeding, including school zone and construction zone
- Red light and stop sign
- Improper lane change, following too closely, improper passing
- Failure to move over for an emergency vehicle
- Expired tags, no proof of insurance, window tint, seat belt
- Reckless driving and driving on a suspended license, which are criminal charges heard on the same docket
- CDL citations, handled under the federal rules on a separate page
Twelve points
Tennessee suspends a license at twelve points in any twelve-month period. A Germantown ticket that looks minor on its own can be the one that pushes you over if you already have recent convictions, and a suspension creates a new criminal exposure the first time you drive on it. If you are not sure where you stand, tell us when you call and we will pull your record before court.
Germantown Municipal Court
Germantown is one of the few courts in Shelby County that sits in the evening. That is convenient if you want to attend, and most people do not. An evening docket is a full docket, so plan on a long wait if you go yourself. For almost every traffic citation we appear in your place, resolve it, and report back the same night. The only time you need to be there is a trial, and we would prepare you for that well ahead of time.

What we do with it
Text us a photo of the citation. We confirm the court date, tell you the fee (from $250), and, if you want us, enter an appearance so the city knows you are represented. On the Wednesday docket we negotiate the resolution, handle any paperwork, and let you know what happened and what, if anything, you owe the court. If a trial is the right call, we tell you that too. Before you pay a Germantown ticket, call (901) 324-5000. The consultation is free.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to appear in person for my Germantown court date?
Usually not. For an ordinary traffic citation we appear for you on the Wednesday evening docket and you stay at work or at home. You would only need to be present for a trial, and we would prepare you for that in advance.
I do not live in Germantown. Can you still handle it?
Yes. Most of the Germantown tickets we handle are for people from Memphis, Collierville, Cordova, and out of state. We appear for you, so where you live does not matter. For out-of-state drivers we also explain how the outcome reaches your home-state record before anything is final.
What does a Germantown traffic ticket lawyer cost?
A flat fee starting at $250 per ticket, confirmed after we see the citation and before you commit to anything. Suburban municipal courts run differently from 201 Poplar, which is why Germantown is a little more than our $200 Memphis City Court fee. The fee covers the appearance and the resolution; court costs, if any, are paid to the city.
Will a Germantown ticket raise my insurance?
If you pay it, almost certainly, because paying is a conviction for a moving violation. If the ticket is dismissed or amended to a non-moving violation, nothing reaches your driving record and your insurer has nothing to see.
I missed my Germantown court date. What now?
Call us the same day. A missed traffic setting leads to a failure-to-appear notice, a possible capias, and a hold on your license. We can usually get the case reset and the hold lifted, but it gets harder and more expensive the longer it sits.
I have a CDL. Does any of this apply to me?
Only partly. Federal rules bar driving school and diversion for commercial license holders, even for a ticket in your personal car, so the options above are narrower for you. Read our Germantown CDL ticket page and call before you do anything with the citation.
